In Love, you find beauty. And in beauty you find happiness and joy. These are the cornerstones of Lubna and I's quest to surround ourselves and offer others happiness by realizing that following your heart within itself is success. And from the love we both share, LB o J'zazz was 'born' and continues to evolve and grow as we do with every passing day.

As we have entered the celebratory month of love and independence, we have dug into all our goodies which symbolize love and are dedicating a full day "Whirling Love with Rumi" at our shop.

To me, and to the world over, Rumi (Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balki) a Persian, Muslim, poet living in the 1200s, mastered the use of the written word to express love through his many compositions of ghazal poems. Taking you and whirling you into realms of love, we will encircle our day with his beautiful words and music while we create our own expressions of love with Turkish filigree pendants, Czech pressed glass beads, Murano Glass beads, Hill Tribe Silver beads, brand NEW Tierra Cast charms, and Decopatch.

Miyuki | Haiku Reflections

Last January 11, 2012 was another gathering at LB o J'zazz that was a celebration of all that is Miyuki. For Bettina and I who were exposed to these amazing creations over seven years back, our journey in creating and sharing the beauty of these small yet breathtaking beads has been a vibrant and interesting one to say the least.
Miyuki is truly poetry and that being said, we had an evening of music from Japan, bowls of hot piping edamame, our wonderful guests and friends, Haiku Poetry contributions on the wall and over 600 little apothecary glass bottles holding Miyuki beads.

Starting from the smallest, pristine and exquisitely made beads which are the Size 15/0 equaling to 1.5mm showcased in hand woven baskets, moving on to a bountiful array of Size 11/0 seed beads, and the precision cut world famous Delicas, onto the new Duracoat Galvanised beads in various sizes, and then our new collection of bugle beads such as the Antique Black Twisted Bugle in 2x6mm that are just perfect for fringing and bead embroidery. In addition, we also showcased the standard Magatamas and the new shape of the Long Magatamas. It was a celebration of colors, hues, shapes, finishes and coating that were a feast to the eye and food for the soul and imagination.

In the 1940's which was considered the Showa Period in Japan, seed beads were being made and in 1949 on the island of Hiroshima, Miyuki Shoji of Japan was established. The world of ornamentation, embellishing, off loom and on loom beading has never been the same. They consider the making of bead a fusion of artistry, hand crafting and technology. Creating new shapes such as the world renowned Delica Beads and Tila Beads has changed the face of how we are creating beaded objects to treasure and to transcend the times and to resonate.

As a child all the way in the US I was taught Haiku Poetry as a concept that came from Japan and it has different constructs from Japanese to English yet still holds the same depth and accessibility to approach. Haiku tends to use nature and seasonality to evoke moods and moments of reflection that are quite symbiotic to the contemplative practice of beading. In the English version of Haiku, one will have a total of 17 syllables so to speak broken into three lines whereby the first line consists of 5 syllables, the second line of 7 syllables and the last line of the poem is 5 syllables.

Here is one of the most famous Haiku poems in Japanese by Matsuo Basho " The Old Pond" and then transliterated:

Furuike ya
kawazu tobikomu
mizu no oto

An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.

So much of what we have known in the world up until 2011 changed dramatically and at super sonic speed, yet the stilling of the mind and being present is even more meaningful and required in this day and time. So without further ado, our January Meet and Bead is just around that virtual corner.
It has been a year where LB o J'zazz gained new friends, shared our passion for handmade and continued to strive to offer beautiful, quality products and a plethora of class offerings. We aim to continue to create a community of beaders and makers that will enrich our lives and create objects that are satisfying to the eye and nourish the soul.

In our journeys outside and within Kuwait there have been some eye opening discoveries that the interaction of technical know how surely does not exist in a vacuum and permeates more than we realize. One day, as Bettina and I were meeting with a group of talented makers from Turkey in the precious metal industry here in Kuwait we were visiting their factory and stumbled upon cabinets full of older vintage molds. When we asked about them we were told that their fathers had worked these amazing filigree pieces over twenty years ago.

A rose is a rose is a rose is a thorn

As this has a lot to do with our LB o J'zazz shop in Shaab el Bahry this post is dedicated to what's in a name or street designation and on as lightly a satirical note as I can summon. When we first opened our shop and still to this day two years later, our landlords are still working on a sign and a name for the building. We just about passed out holding our breaths waiting. So, instead the new Executive Flex adjacent to our two storey nameless shopping complex got free promotion on all our communication materials, our business cards, receipts, virtual communications and what not. Anytime we would describe our main street location people were able to find Ibn al Khatib Street quite easily. We even had it Google Mapped. It's been there for years and was an easy name. The way it sounded was pretty catchy and cool also. That too was on all our communications.

Approximately a month ago, a journalist was trying to reach us and she called me at the shop, I was giving her my directions which were : " So you get off Route 30 right after the bridge and you make a right immediately onto Ibn al Khatib Street" well, she kept insisting the street did not exist and was some sort of fuzzy figment of my already vivid imagination. Chaminda then responds to me and says : "Oh yes, they changed it to Mohammed Darwish Al Aradi a few days ago." "Mohammed Darwish who?" I ask and still ask. I then walk out onto the main street and sure enough Ibn al Khatib is nowhere to be found. Where did he go Ibn al Khatib, has the road designation been sent to Baladia exile in less desirable areas and just who is Mr. Al Aradi and what did he do to deserve eliminating a slice of our memory, consciousness and street?

Streets, social and civic centers and schools become part of our landmarks and cultural points of reference. That is why this naming process is of serious concern. It seems that the criteria for naming is seriously lacking in substance, values and devoid of meaning. I constantly insist that our creative members of our community can and should be recognized in our daily lives. This is for a start. We should also consider and recognize those people who lost their lives during the Invasion of Kuwait in 1990 along with the citizens who were kidnapped and taken as Prisoners of War never to return.
If the street was going to change it would have resonated a vital chord if for example it was changed from Ibn al Khatib (a historic figure not related to Kuwait's history) to say Aisha Al Marta's or Asrar Al Qabandi Street. (These are only examples)
However, after my research I found out that Mr. Al Aradi was an adviser to the late ruler and this seemed to hold great merit enough to change the name of a street. In more civilized societies the people residing and having businesses in an area are asked through Town Councils as to whether they accept the idea of changing the street name and to what the change would be.
Canada Dry Street in Shuwaikh is another example and despite the fact that the Canada Dry Factory no longer exists, the nomenclature still holds. Yet, the Municipality has published the name change and as long as these changes have been published in the newspapers after the fact, they have absolved themselves yet again. With all the new areas and suburbs that have new fresh un-named streets, I'm sure Mr. Al-Aradi's street sign would have found a more welcome presence.
Again, someone knowingly or unknowingly is erasing our contemporary memory, just like the old courtyard homes and historical neighborhoods that have been demolished from our consciousness.
Now, when I describe our location the dialogue begins with: " Do you know Ibn al Khatib Street?" they answer "Yes" my response is: " Well now it is Mohammed Darwish Al Aradi's Street formerly known as Ibn al Khatib". I wonder how our new business cards will look?

I woke up this morning full of energy that seemed to match the crispiness in the air. Getting ready to head out for a full day of administrative errands and a get together for a cuppa with one of my favorite people and artists Angels Madrueno.
So while having my first morning cuppa brew I downloaded some quick pics and some really quick editing to post and share about our first debut of Soda Pop Bling | Totemic Flights at the Bejeweled Show held by Gallery Tilal. It was such an eye opener and meeting so many different people in that amazing space was the best way for LB o J'zazz to introduce our body of work. Soda Pop Bling | Totemic Flights At Gallery Tilal November 29

This Tuesday November 29 there will be a Bejeweled Exhibition at Gallery Tilal featuring four participants. I am really looking forward to welcoming you to LB o J'zazz's first local participation at a gallery level which is the ideal medium for our select artisanal work as each piece is unique and is never repeated. Soda Pop Bling is a quirky collection playing on elements we see everyday that have been modified to a more elevated status.
In addition, Totemic Flights is a new body of work that comprises a sub grouping within the Kindred Spirits Project. Iconic symbols such as the totem and cross have been some of many attempts of man to connect the physicality of the body to a cosmological connection with the skies. The vertical reaching attempts are evident in this collection of man reaching to the heavens and the cosmos.

Fareed Abdal will also be introducing a stunning select collection of new pieces of body adornment in the form of bangles that are a continuation of his play and discoveries of the letter forms and letters in the Arabic language. These will be available by order. The 28 Faces Of The Beloved Rings Collection will also be available by special order.

As many people are out of the country, Kuwait seems less frenetic and the traffic is manageable and after the first few days of family visits, I will be dedicating most of my time cleaning up my studio and working on new pieces for an upcoming exhibition and creating new samples for upcoming classes.

Boho Chic Cuff: RAW* Class This Saturday November 5

Size 6/0 Czech and a myriad of layers in RAW*

When we scheduled the class last month, most of those who had been eagerly awaiting to take it were unable to attend so I promised to do a repeat for many reasons the first being this is one of the most rewarding projects that has come out from my hands and is just rich and multi-layered with subtle details. The second is that you asked for it again....
This technique is one of the most versatile modes of off loom weaving that allows you to create beautiful fabric like pieces or to have a more sculptural output. With a few design modifications that Bettina suggested and a breakthrough in reinterpreting the closure in macrame you will be rewarded with a stunning cuff that will be a conversation piece without a doubt.

The recipe: beautiful beads, thread and your talent!

Beginning with creating the base employing Size 6/0 Czech beads from our new arrivals combined with Size 11/0 as the first layer. Layers and additional embellishing will create a unique and assymetrical piece as the actual structure of the weave is explored. A macrame knotting technique that I mastered as a fourth grader back in the day and will be revived and combined for a simple but delicate and functional closure.

LB o J'zazz on our first Venetian Nights

Tomorrow we are going to slow things down by not running a class as it seems that many of us need to catch up on projects and complete purchases for that special missing item. Madha'ad Celebration: Right Angle Weave Class Saturday October 15

Madha'ad Celebration In Celadon

In the past year in particular, my explorations in Right Angle Weave have been taking quite a bit of my beading time and seems to have opened a lot of fresh ideas and new interpretations. This approach was pioneered by the Right Angle Weave Master Marcia DeCoster and her techniques allow one to discover the beauty of beads as if it was the first time every time one picks up a needle, thread and some seed beads.
Researching the local jewelry here in Kuwait led me to look at new expressions of traditional designs such as this Madha'ad which connotes bangle in the local Kuwaiti dialect. I grew up here in the 70's and have vivid memories of my late paternal grandmother baking bread and seeing the flash of her gold Madhaa'ad and hearing the jangle as she prepared the dough.
The bangles would usually be in gold and were in a rigid form and sometimes would be inlaid with natural pearls or gemstones taking many of the design elements from India, Persia and the East African Coast.
By creating a fabric like mesh in RAW* and then applying it to an armature or rigid form allowed the beads to be presented in a more sculptural and dimensional visual. The kits will be available in five vivid and vibrant colorways to celebrate the history and culture of adornment that graced the wrists of most women here in Kuwait.

Soft Flex Metallics In A Beautiful Braided Bracelet

This simple yet age old design of braiding continues to be appealing to this day. In this bracelet, I wanted to emulate the look of metal work without the effort or cost. By using Soft Flex Beading Wire in the Metallics range in the heaviest weights this was easily achieved. The Metallics are enhanced by a color mixing technique that was created to enhance the metallic sheen subtly.
The final look works well for both ladies and gents, but you will also learn how to add links and findings for a dressier look with Crystal Briolettes and special bails. Ending with special closures to secure the braided piece and a simple Vintaj closure.

Craft Talk, Ideation and Great NimNim Creations

I have to say, all of our Meet and Bead evenings are enjoyable, and whenever one is coming up the family knows well in advance that the first Friday of each month is solely dedicated to preparations during the day leading up as we welcome new faces, regulars and guests in to the LB o J'zazz Beading Zone for several hours sharing creations, ideas, talking about inspiration perhaps over a cup of tea, homemade lemonade or one of my homemade hearty soups.
However, our last gathering in September was even more special, in that many new visitors joined and really added new ideas, dimensions and gave insightful feedback upon seeing the various work of the group. It makes one feel optimistic when you meet other like minded individuals who take pleasure in simply creating with their hands. One of our new guests Amina when asked when she started working with paper and color she answered:" Ever since I could remember as a young child in grade school."

She provides a wide range of paper art solutions through her business called STELLA. Her designs are vibrant and lively and she's really responsive to hearing requests and is opened to new ideas. I was able to select from what she shared with us and can't wait to see what else she will be making in the future.
We had several new faces grace the Zone, a master diver Tareq who is creating his own visions and was keen on receiving design and form feedback along with sharing how he came about his concept and his passion for nature and diving. Along with those who just enjoyed the company of craft makers and the conversations that came along with it.
Here is some more beautifully handcrafted objects that were shared last night. Reem Al Hajri of https://www.facebook.com/ARAMQ8 excels and is delving in off loom weaving. She seems to enjoy Dutch Spiral, Spiral Stitch, Ndebele, Brick Stitch and Peyote as can be seen in some samples of her work. I got two of the rings. They look like insects getting ready to alight and float away. I like how my 'Seen' from the "28 Faces Of The Beloved Collection" by Fareed Abdal contrasts the shape of the ring.

So much was going on and the highlight of the evening was when a few guests came a bit later and we started talking about what it meant and how do we actually feel when working with our hands and beading or crafting. We delved in the historical aspects along with the therapeutic aspects that physiologically seem to change and noticeably improve our state of well being. Anytime, an idea came about, someone would find another interesting object to admire and wonder how and why it was made. So, as much as Nerissa enjoys wirework, re-purposing and Vintage Jewelry designing she also works on what she calls Canvas and what I call Affirmation Word Arts as she shared some of her visions and pieces.

Bead Embroidery By Request: Vintage Au Provence Earrings Class

Bead Embroidery simply put is quite addictive. As you can see from my own work, it represents a lot of the creations that are in the LB o J'zazz archives and collections. Taking a beautifully crafted cabochon or semi precious stone cab adhering it to a surface and creating layers of details and color shifts through bezeling with Circular Peyote creates a rich tapestry of painting like approach with beads on the foundation material that acts as the canvas.
These earrings began as an idea for a birthday gift over a year ago for my creative and business partner and BBF Bettina. It took me a while to complete them with our hectic work schedule but she did receive the pair before departing with her daughter Sara to Ireland. I wanted to make sure that she had something with her from me that was handmade as a sort of talisman. Plus, the selfish part of me wanted her to remember me each time she wore them or saw them in her jewelry stash.
Taking the two main components and assembling the units into a symbiotic fusion will be a new approach. The grand finale will be the fringing technique perfected, championed and mastered by our wonderful teacher Sherry Serafini that inspired me and will take the project to yet another level. There will be no less than four kits available to choose from.

Byzantine Queen in Byzantium Blues

Explore another variation in Right Angle Weave in this earring set inspired by the Byzantine Period. The Byzantine Empire emerged when the capital of the Roman Empire was transferred to Constantinople in the 4th Century well until the15th Century. Byzantine fashion took it's color inspiration and decorative tradition from the Orient and Middle East. Due to it's active history of trade with the East, fabrics that were rich oranges, greens, and ochres became more in demand. However, the one color purple became associated with wealth and royalty. Hence the work Byzantium for a rich, royal purple came to be. The jewelry incorporated a fusion of pearls, semiprecious stones and gold in rich layers and details.

This is the evolution of a series of chokers originally created in 2005 whilst bedridden for two weeks. The idea of musical sheets, and crystals dancing off the scales along with my life long fascination with insects and spider webs; this choker has come a long way. The new structure that I have been working on in the past few months incorporates a special patterning in Right Angle Weave and is fused with stringing with our Czech Bicones ranging from 3mm to 6mm. It drapes and frames the collarbone dramatically yet differently on each wearer. Truly an extravaganza of crystals that play off the base in an arresting manner.

One of the most requested designs, this is a great way to spend some creative time in the LB o J'zazz Beading Zone before Futoor for some quality meditative beading.
With a needle and thread you will learn how to create an embellished cabochon from scratch and assemble the earrings all the way to the earring posts. We will be working with celebrated Master Jindrich's hand crafted cabochons from the Bohemia Region.

In tandem with the astonishing activity happening on our Sun planet, I thought there is no better time to introduce this 'astronomical' class to our wonderful students and to Kuwait then now.

Albight it may look simple, creating an Open-back Bezel in this class will require previous experience in beading, patience and love. An advanced class, this encapsulating technique mainly requires precision in details and appreciation of working with high quality Japanese cylindrical and tiny round seed beads. With that receipe, I assure you the outcome can only be termed as priceless.

All the credit for learning this advanced beading technique goes to my teacher and Master Beader extraordinaire Laura McCabe about 5 years ago. During a marathon of workshops in mid-2000's, i came across a photo that made my eyes tickle. And even though the class was 'Advanced', I was not about to let that deter me from learning how to create such exquisite, "living", and detailed pieces. This Saturday, I share the core of what I learned with you.

I will show you how to cradle and center this Rivoli pendent with seed beads, embellish with sparkling vivid crystals, suspend off strun Soft Flex heaving wire with more crystals andaccented by Tierra Cast's fine findings and beads, and lastly the proper, clean way to close your piece. In lieu of my upcoming geographical break away, there are two projects in particular that warrant advance scheduling for classes. These two projects are in fact some of my favorites. The first one will be a brand new class in Bead Embroidery and the second class will be the rescheduled Dancing Crystals Choker II. They are quite different in feel and concept.
You will have ample time to pre-register and select your kits and will post the dates for when each respective class colorways will be ready for you to see at the shop with Chaminda. Gujarati Kholkhaal Class In Right Angle Weave This Saturday July 23

Lately, I have been revisiting books on various cultures and in particular a book by Wade Davis http://www.nationalgeographic.com/field/explorers/wade-davis.html. The book is called Light At The Edge Of The World and it covers a range of peoples who are vanishing such as the Aboriginal communities in Australia, the Sarawaks and the Innuits of the Arctic Region. Images, costume, how they live, eat, hunt and thrive in their own modality never ceases to intrigue me. Learning about others has fascinated me ever since I was a young child no older than five and seems to fuel the creative juices so to speak.
So, as I began working on my first anklet, the research triggered a wealth of inspiration and ideas. Looking at how nomadic and semi nomadic communities transported their identities and personal worth through personal adornment is arresting and captivates the imagination.

In Kuwaiti dialect the word for anklet is "Al Hujool" ; the letter j in the word quickly transforms into a y therefore becoming "Al Huyool" and the regional word is "Khulkhaal" the plural being "Khalakhil" which denotes the jingling effect of certain bell like findings. My imagination always goes to the beauty of the dancer with her anklets and how she gains attention by the jingling effect of her feet as she twirls and dances. So my research went further east to India as I began to see images of the state of Gujarat and began to discover more images and details of the costumes and jewelry.

This is actually the first anklet ever that I have created and it's delicate design yet lively colors attest to the beautiful dance of life and beauty. Employing Swarovski Round Pearls, Czech Pressed Glass Daggers, Fire Polished Beads, Czech Seed Beads and Sterling Silver drops that curves naturally and drapes the ankle eloquently.

Knowledge and Wisdom Banks: Three Generations Of Al Bakhit's On A Quiet Saturday Morn

This morning was a real treat as I watched three generations in the Al Bakhit family spend a morning sharing, learning and just being with each other. Today, we had Suzanna (Grandmother), Bettina (Mom first, Teacher second), Sara (daughter, student) and last but not least Meshari ( son and self appointed supervisor) all together joining the rest of us for the Tierra Frenzy class. It doesn't get better than that. Of course our wonderful student and friend Ahmed Abdulla along with my self in my supporting role today. I would also like to mention that Ahmed had set up a photo studio in our little abode and had taken the photos in this post.

This was a class that comprised of twenty three separate components and was a fusion between Wirework and Off Loom Weaving. Bettina created this piece during Chaminda's recent leave to Sri Lanka and in the realm of the shop.
What was interesting and fulfilling to observe were the connections not only of the findings in the kits but between Mother and Mother; Bettina and Suzannah, Mother and Daughter; Bettina, Suzannah and Sara, Mother and Son, Teacher and Students. It all came to the wonderful sharing across ages and generations and that resonates across times and cultures.

Those people who taught others how to make things were always held in high regard and reverence. The first lady to teach me knitting and a love for beads was the most amazing babysitter back in the 70's. She was a Native American from Alaska and was a highschool student. If only I could find her and thank her for patiently answering the tireless and endless questions of an inquisitive six year old and allowing me to enter the rich world of handcrafting. This Saturday July 16, my partner in creativity and crime; Bettina and I will be initiated into the world of radio for the first time. Radio is quite a different media and how we come across through audio will be quite interesting. None other than our beader extraordinaire whose passion for beads is what initiated Radio Personality and Presenter Samira Al Suliman to invite us as her guests on " Dhuyoof Alaa El Thani".

Bettina and I were invited to talk about how two individuals with quite different educational backgrounds came up with and created LB o J'zazz and the passion for all things artisanal and in particular beaded adornment. It felt effortless during the pre-recorded session and Samira was in command of the studio, her material and how she poised her questions. It did not feel like an interview, just flowing conversations. Since it seemed that many of our LB o J'zazzers wanted to make this class and Bettina's inspiration was so spontaneous we decided to reschedule this beautiful piece to this coming Saturday July 16.

Sometimes design ideas pour out and luckily these past 3 days they have just been overflowing! And if you are me, you have to be awake at the wee hours of the morning to capture these creative splurges, or better yet, be at the shop listening to Sade while being surrounded by little glass beauties.

With that said, I have come up with a project for this Saturday's class- The Teirra Frenzy Necklace. Using high quality, U.S.-made cast and lead free metal components, this copper-plated piece showcases many interesting ways one can use little treasures- from chains, to bails, charms, links, beads, spacers, head pins etc.
A simple, round, disc-shaped, Murano glass bead with silver dichroic takes center stage. What a lovely job it does.

This should be a fun class.

Those who choose to participate in this class, will learn techniques in wirework and an off-loom beading technique known as Right-Angle Weave with a 'twist'.

It's such a surprise when you realize just how much time has passed since Bettina and I first opened our doors of our little gem of our LB o J'zazz shop. For the first year and a half we manned the store exclusively every day five days a week mornings and afternoons. Dusting, dusting, dusting and then more dusting of crystals, beads, fixtures and displays, merchandising, pricing and promoting. Moving stock, tagging, labeling and inventory management. More importantly, the welcoming of people into our abode and servicing them LB o J'zazz style was all required in a day at LB o J'zazz | Shaab el Bahry. It was hard work but extremely fulfilling and rewarding.

So, in lieu of Chaminda being on leave for the next two weeks we will be at the shop beginning this Sunday, July 3rd. We will be alternating our days, beginning with myself being there first thing in the morning. If we run a class on Saturdays then we will have the shop closed for that day and will let you know accordingly. At this rate, I hope that Bettina and I get a chance to see each other!

Off Loom and Stringing Fusion: Dancing Crystals Choker Class This Saturday July 2

Our original design has been revisited and recreated for a new take on one of our most popular classes. The concept came about when I was recuperating and bedridden for two weeks back in 2006. The idea of creating a melodic dancing sequence of crystals with the use of beading wire and off loom weaving. As the crystals jump off their lines they sparkle and play along the neckline. I wanted to create a piece that would drape and enhance the collarbone area differently on each wearer.
In this interpretation, the base is created in RAW* (Right Angle Weave) whereby it naturally curves along the neck due to the various sizes employed. It has a creature like feel and sometimes also reminded me of the cantilevers and structures of the huge wires suspended from bridges. Employing our Soft Flex Metallics Beading Wire to suspend the crystals in an airy and playful manner. Each time the piece is made it is never like any of the other Dancing Crystals.

Learn how to merge and combine two distinct applications of Off Loom Weaving and Stringing. This class is an excellent pre-requisite for those wanting to perfect the Right Angle Weave. In addition, a new application to create the closure will be presented.

In February 2010, Bettina took a day trip visit exploring the area around Bubyan Island and the desert we so rarely get to experience nowadays due to urbanization and lack of preservation measures. Here is what she had to say:

In the absolute moment that a question was asked, “Is there anything that inspires you while your designing a piece”? My immediate reply did not give justice to the moments I experienced last week in the Kuwaiti desert. Like a little child, I rushed around the desert marveling at strangers I was meeting for the first time in my life! Flowering shrubs and cacti stood proudly and exerted their new presence throughout the Northern desert.

Life had returned to the desert with fragrant purple flowers and masterfully and heavenly created succulents/ cacti breaking through the earth reaching to the sky, relishing the sun. Thanks to the unusually heavy rainfall this season, our desert is turning into a garden. In tribute to the new life given to those fascinating desert “acquaintances” I have encountered, I dedicate the

“Desert Rose”.

With shear joy and in awe of Bettina's new “friendships”, the Desert Rose Bracelet has been developed and designed using an intricate yet simple technique called the Cross-Angle weave. June 21 Class | Explorations In Peyote: Petals and Leaves

Small yet intricate shapes evoking Petals and Leaves

The ancient stitch of Peyote yields many rewards as it can mimic and evoke shapes from nature. Whether it is playing with odd or even count stitches, simple techniques can allow for more embellishing and fringing elements. These techniques were perfected and inspired by the master bead weaver and teacher Laura McCabe and can be modified with practice.

Participants will learn how to properly set up and hold the bead work along with quickly building up these foundational design elements using cylinder and seed beads. You will also see finished pieces that incorporate these elements to trigger new articulations for future objects of adornment. These pieces can be added to other projects, however, you will also be able to incorporate these elements in a future class.

Fly My Butterfly

It's a time like this that a hand-made item made with love can never be replaced by anything purchased. For my 18 year old daughters' Prom night I wanted to make jewelry she would cherish and which would hold many emotions and feelings starting from the hands that made them to special moments spent that evening with her friends.

Starting off, I thought to make her a necklace that would be elaborate and striking. Her request was miles off the mind track I was on!

"Mommy make me something elegent and simple. I don't want a necklace, only a bracelet". Talk about throwing me totally off track!

Frankly, I must say I thought about it for 2 weeks. Looked through magazines in hopes of getting inspired. Three days before Prom, it dawned to me what materials I would use for the earrings first. A Swarovski Rivoli I purchased years ago from one of my trips to the United States would be the focal. Thanks to Laura Macabe class, I decided to implement the circular Peyote technique around to frame and encase the Rivoli.

As my daughters' request was for the color blue, I decided to introduce two different blues, sky blue and torquoise seed beads. For an accent color I used dark topaz AB seed beads at the inner most frame circling the Rivoli. When that was done, I strategically introduced Swarovski crystal pearls, bicones, and butterfly beads in order to give warmth, softness, youthfulness and character to the earrings.

Thankfully, after showing my daughter the first earring I got her blessings and went straight ahead to complete the second.

"Fly My Butterfly" earrings was born.

Drawing a complete blank the next day, I decided to approach it the way I always have and just create as I go along. I laugh as I recall my little bracelet journey only because I ended up learning something new myself. Naively I thought I would be able to finish a bracelet faster if I used wirework rather than off-loom. Ha! The joke was on me. But I must say, I like the outcome. A complete row of wirework with butterflies. So delicate and liberating just like the feeling a young person has when graduating. Perfect.

As more color and softness was needed, I decided to string 2 rows of crystals; one crystal pearls and the other row bicone crystals. All strung and connected to a 3-loop sliding clasp, I made the deadline and was extremely pleased. Most importantly, my most important and precious client was pleased too.

The past 11 years of beading all came down to this one critical moment- making something with my own 2 hands for my daughter to compliment her beauty on this special day in her life. Allah ya7fetha.

The Why Behind LB o J'zazz: Spotlight Segment On Al Watan

A few weeks back, one of our followers Fessal Rajab who has been keeping a keen eye on most of the images we publish of our off loom weaving and other work, contacted us to do a ten minute feature for a program he worked on called Spotlight on Al Watan TV. So, we agreed to set the date and time that they would interview both Bettina and I whilst working in our workshop studio.
Initially, we were going to focus on the craft in terms of process, however thanks to our answers and the dialogue the approach quickly shifted to the 'why' of it so to speak. Bettina in her first published interview in Arabic turned the whole segment around with her refreshing honesty and authentic take on why we as human beings take the plunge to move away from the contemporary trappings of a career and what societies and people expect from us.
We had over thirty people in our workspace, lighting specialists, Nouf Al Modhayan the presenter, Fessal, the director, producers and what not. Thanks to the Al Watan Team for the pre and post production.

The Joys Of Teaching 101

This past Saturday we got the chance to teach the Luscious Lariat for a second time this season, and it's amazing to see how this piece evolves and became a medium for self expression. We had five colorways and the freedom to add and embellish at will.

What was also interesting when I pulled my latest purchases from the Venetian Night collection and spontaneously incorporated it in the tassles and focal point on one side of the lariat. This is definitely a class that can be modified and redefined and will be offered in different modulations. Will be posting the finished Luscious Lariats as soon as the samples are completed.

The best part of teaching is getting to see the sense of accomplishment and more importantly fulfillment that our students express. They leave light and smiling despite the long hours of demos, practicing and learning that they go through on beginning early on a Saturday morning.

Off Loom Weaving Class: Luscious Lariat Saturday May 28

This was our first class of introducing the lariat necklace. In five de-Luscious colorways to choose from, you will master the Spiral Stitch as it quickly builds up employing our custom coated Farfalles. This is one of the most versatile techniques to build and create ropes that are sturdy yet beautiful. You will then begin to learn the techniques of embellishing and fringing with a potpourri of findings, beads and Czech Crystals. You are encouraged to also bring your favorite dangles, charms and beads from your stash to add and personalize your lariat as this will add to the lushness and personalize the piece.

Off Loom Weaving Class: Rococo Cuff In Two Drop Peyote

We can never get enough of Peyote! This coming Saturday we will be offering a class that is based on a cuff that I made over five years ago. It is a staple item in my layering of beaded adornment and never stop receiving compliments and endless requests to offer it as a class. So, the design has been modified and will have some added twists and new details.

This piece was made over 5 years back and is the inspiration of the class

The main body of the Rococo Cuff is in two-drop Peyote and will create a fabric like feel once you wear it. The project consists of five main elements beginning with the two-drop Peyote and then working off the base into Ndebele stitch and then on to a new technique of fringing.

The new detailing in this piece will be that you will be creating your own beaded toggle and circular clasp all in Peyote. So the piece will have an organic flow and allows you to create your own findings just in case you don't have the right closure you will be able to bead your own. In addition the floral element was removed to create a bolder finishing. The kit will come in several delectable colorways to select from and is an excellent starting point to embellishing. I will post the new design by tomorrow as a preview.

Artists' Block Bye Bye

A term I am not certain I have ever come across before other than in the literary world, but "artists' block" or "creativity block" was something I encountered over the last few months. But I am happy to say that I found my "cure" in Italy. Bye bye and hello Italy.

Todays' class was the first class inspired by that journey and it holds tribute to the absolutely phenomenal physical and spiritual beauty I absorbed in Tuscany (Toscana-Italian version). And luckily I was able to share some of that energy with the amazingly brave students who attended this mornings Toscana Dutch Spiral Earring class.

Workshop: Toscana Dutch Spiral Earrings this Saturday

New to our workshop series is a beautiful beading technique that opens your creative sphere into a whole undiscovered realm. LB o J'zazz is happy to introduce the Dutch Spiral. I must admit that although it can be challenging, the end results are just majestic. What makes this such a unique technique is how the repetitive movement naturally forces a 'spiraling' form to take shape as though the 'twist' is forced and yet the follow is graceful. Endless possibilities of applying different sizes and shapes of beads into this one technique allows you to enjoy an entirely fascinating new look in addition to opening up fresh opportunities.

Also to compliment "Toscana Dutch Spiral Earrings" workshop, we will also be showing you what you can do when you just can not get to a store to get the basic earring hook you need to complete your home project. So a little stitching and a little wirework will be on the table this weekend.

We had a phenomenal turnout of LB o J'zazzers this past Saturday as we raised the bar and participants worked on their Fab Cabs. When we originally posted the write up for the class, the response was overwhelmingly positive. However, as I felt the design needed some modifying, it was off to the Beading Kitchen this morning and this is what unfolded. The cab was so wonderful to work with as colorways were subtle, layered and rich. There will be four different colored kits available: Sage Green, Golden Roses, Blue Skies Opal and Cool Turquoise. It will be interesting to see who chooses what in terms of the kits.

Introduction To Bead Embroidery 101: Fab Cab in Peyote

We will be introducing some of our new cabochons by the great master Jindrich along with some kits that have our selection that Bettina and I chose while visiting him in his studio and home in the Czech Republic.
Today, there are a handful of artisans who are still committed to this craft and soon it will be very hard to find these beautiful cabochons that have been made one focal bead at a time for the last two hundred years.

The Fab Cab Ring is an introduction to Bead Embroidery basics along with Circular Peyote. You will learn how to work with the cabochons and foundation material and how to manipulate the surface with Bead Embroidery and embellishing.

Mucha's Flowers Bracelet Class Saturday April 16

Building on the addictive passion of classes in Right Angle Weave, we are bringing back one of our popular projects that re-creates the dreamy Art Nouveau palettes of Alphonse Mucha that we see in his poster and menu designs. Flowers played a big role in Mucha's work who was originally from Moravia and is evoked in these Spring and Summer hues that we have recreated. He used fresh but delicate colors in his illustrations that can be seen all over Europe especially France and the Czech Republic.
However, as Bettina and I strive to perfect our projects, this design has been modified with the use of special Japanese and Czech drops that have enhance the outcome and wearability of the bracelet. You will also learn a simple technique to customize your Precious Metal Clasp so that it becomes more unified with the design. So the output is going to be a bit of a surprise for those who will take the class.

I Finally Got The Bag !

I have a sibling Lail who would not be caught dead without carrying a branded bag and has taken the search for them to new heights. It's very interesting how siblings operating systems can be so different. On the other hand, I long for artisanal bags, ethnic and locally made using locally sourced materials that is why I do not possess many because they are so hard to find. Well now, for the first time I can carry a bag and say this was made, designed and executed by a local artist in Kuwait..... Yes, the proud, the few who has a Madhawi Bint Yagout Clutch.

A few weeks back at our March Meet and Bead Madhawi pulled out a prototype. The bag is a result of the local tradition of basket and mat weaving (khoos and zabeel containers ) that Madhawi's late father had taught her and her siblings how to master. So, she took the weavings of her brother, constructed them and combined them with her signature crochet in beautiful Turkish Cotton Thread and that was what spurred the request for two bags to be made one for my sister in law Mona which would be a beach bag in bright summery hues and a bag for me. I have never been so delighted with the combination of the traditional weaving textures along with her ability to construct and mold the weaves.

The bags were so popular at our Meet & Bead that we will soon be carrying samples at the LB o J'zazz store in Shaab the bags will be available by special order. These are truly unique and also come with high finishing as Madhawi has also lined the bags with lovely fabrics and little details such as inner pockets in crochet that truly make a difference. Madhawi also teaches crochet, paints, sews, weaves, beads and is a classical pianist by training!

This class is a Limited Kit Series as we are offering 5 kits at this time. Hopefully, soon we will have a new array of delectable Czech Firepolished Beads as more classes in RAW* (Right Angle Weave) come you your way.

In this session you will master the single needle Right-angle Weave (RAW) using shimmering Czech Fire Polished beads and lead-free crystal bicones. This romantic interpretation of Arab geometry is a beautiful addition to the up-coming fall season. To accentuate this piece further, you will also learn to incorporate different elemental glass beads such as the pressed glass daggers.

Kindly note that this class is an excellent pre-requisite for more of the intermediate and advance classes in this technique.

Chaminda this morning dusting, dusting and then more dusting

This morning Chaminda and I started setting up for our special evening in honor of Mother Earth. Due to the crazy and wild sand storm we had a lot of dust to contend with and candles to lay out. The pictures are grainy as the light was dim and I did my best not to use a flash so that the images are relevant to "Lights Out".

As the lighting got dimmer early in the evening I started working on our special incentives for Earth Hour. Using some of used brown packing paper and some markers made our own in-house coupons.

We had such an incredible evening, and by the time Chaminda and I were done and home it was almost midnight. What made this so memorable were our guests who came to be part of Earth Hour, they lit candles and hung out as we began our countdown and with the intention of what each and everyone of us will do beyond the 60+.

Music, homebrewed organic coffee and hot cider along with goodies from our neighbors Divine and a candle lit evening I can say that we are more than ready to have get togethers at the shop with wonderful friends and guests that we always seem to get.

There was a lot of energy in our shopping complex due to our activities and hopefully by 2012, the whole complex and Kuwait will turn their lights and switch to candles for Earth Hour with a long term commitment to what really matters: the quality of our life with some wisdom on how we utilize our resources, waste management and the status of water.

For the record I've never been an April Fool's fan, nor Valentines afficianado at that rate, because the spontaneity for a good laugh and true love should not be programmed. So, we are having our regular Meet & Bead on the first Friday of every month which just happens to be this April 1st.
New guests and friends are more than welcome to join, as we share our passion and get to bead with you in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. So bring any projects from previous classes that you would like to complete. Both Bettina and I will be available to assist you. I'm also working on new summer beverages to offer you as the weather gets warmer. At this time vivid, ruby ice cold Aswani Karkade (hibiscus flowers) sounds nice.

Two Good Reasons Why We Will Not Be Offering A Class This Saturday March 26

Living and working in Jabriya has always been great. Since, for several years heading to the office meant simply opening a door where I resided and walking down a few steps and that was all the transportation and time it took. It was such a liberating and effective mode of living and working.

Now, after marriage, luckily my new abode is just a few houses down and on a good day, walking is my mode of travel. Unfortunately, Bettina does not have that luxury except for beading and getting to our beautiful little lamp working glass studio whenever she feels like it which is also located in her domicile. However, in the past few weeks just getting out of my house was like being in a ship, our side street garden was sawed off at right angles and we had a gangplank that would precariously take you over a three meter deep ditch and onto the mercilessly ripped up road, street or something that resembled a road once in recent memory. I have to say that whoever the contractor is they spent a lot of money on access and safety so this must be a hefty contract.
Back to the reasons why we will not be offering a class this Saturday, the first reason is that we have this crane that has taken our house and office hostage as you can see below.

This is what greeted me this morning and a few gangplanks providing various access ways. It looks like we are under siege or protection who knows?

With all the transformations taking place in the world, Peoples movement toward a more liberated existence is at the forefront of our times. Similarly this reminds me of the life cycle of a butterfly from an egg, to a caterpillar, then to the chrysalis where it is in its cocoon-like stage, and finally after great change it turns into a beautifully bright, soaring, free butterfly.

Tuesdays' class project is a tribute the wonderful changes and to our current time.

Our 2-hour wire class "Freedom Butterfly Earrings" will be an introduction to to making the single most important task in wirework- a perfect loop. You will learn how to make a simple loop, a 'P' loop and then take it up a notch and finally make the wrapped loop. Also we will show you how to open and close a loop and a jump ring. These techniques are considered core to wireworking projects and will come a long way for you in any future project you may want to create.

Decopatch Paper to the Rescue

My salvaged pots

How often do you come across an obstacle and find that 'paper' is the solution? Not just any paper but paper that has been responsibily harvested, deep dyed, glazed and is both resilient and beautiful? In my case it is often, at different times, different locations but in one particular case on similar objects- Pots.

Relocating from apartment to apartment or country to country, things tend to get damaged enroute or items left in storage for some time tend to loose their luster and appeal. And if you tend to get 'attached' to certain objects as I do then it can be difficult to convince yourself to get rid of them. This was my little delimma with my flower pots.

After being handled with 'little' care, my flower pots got scratched and were transformed into an eye sore. Still, I was unable to throw them away. Years later, I fortunately came by a paper, Decopatch paper, and was able to salvage and reuse what was soon-to-be garbage into a piece of art!

This season we will be shifting our focus to Stringing and Wirework with select Off Loom Weaving classes interspersed. The materials used are quite different from off loom weaving in addition to the tools that are specific to these techniques. Our first offering this season will focus on Stringing Basics, how to balance the design technically, working with Metallic Stringing Wire, Crimp Beads, Clasps and a variety of Beads and Findings.

Another Evening of Inspiration and Sharing

Last evening we had new visitors join us to share their creations. I always look forward to those Fridays when we get to Meet & Bead, since each time we get to see new ideas, projects and never know who might waltz in through the Beading Zone at LB o J'zazz.

Well, last night was no different, except for the fact that we had new additions plus getting to sample our home brewed Cinnamon Laced Hot Cider. Samira, Mariam and Rahaf joined us for the first time along with our regular beader extraordinaire Hanan. We spread our beading mats and just started a show and tell and each one of us just kept pulling out the goodies and eye candy.
Rahaf is one of our youngest beaders. She is self taught and she has such a way with Bali Beads, macrame and knotting. I have a bracelet of hers that she made and her sense of colors is really bold.

Hanan pulled out her signature Safety Pin Rings and Bracelets and I got my own ring finally! It's the orange and copper one on the lower right of the photograph. It turns out Samira re-uses beads, semiprecious beads and ornaments and her colorways are very interesting. Can't wait to see what she and all LB o J'zazzers bring to our next Meet & Bead which will be Friday April 1st. Until then, bead Happy.

An Evening Celebrating Iris and Our Passion for Beads

Last February 8 we had a wonderful evening with an introduction of Iris, who is part of the LB o J'zazz private collection of lampwork beads. In addition, a journey that was both a geographic and historic exploration of beads as Iris teleported and presented Lubna and Bettina's creations to the KTAA (Kuwait Textile Arts Association) and Bayt Al Sadu.

S. Altaf Salem Al Ali Al Sabah patron of Bayt Al Sadu introduced the duo and highlighted the importance of crafts being maintained across different mediums. The KTAA group had great questions and shared their commitment for how knowledge is transpired through crafts and people across time and place creating a rich language of symbolism and cultural literacy.

In addition, S. Altaf announced a unique collaboration between Bayt Al Sadu and LB o J'zazz as we will be creating an exclusive line that celebrates, interprets traditional Sadu Weaving and is combined through beadwork and embellishments. This line will be available through Bayt Al Sadu Gift Shop and Kuwait Airport in addition to other select locations. More details of this exciting project will be coming your way. The evening was engaging and both Bettina and I enjoyed sharing our stories and passion for beads and would like to thank S. Altaf Salem Al Ali Al Sabah for her initiatives and support, the wonderful powerhouse ladies of the KTAA and the amazing Sadu Weavers who started it all.

Bayt Al Sadu is commemorating the cooperative of 20 years and Kuwait's 50 Years of Independence and we will be sharing our passion and experiences through the intercultural exchange of beads as a form of abstract expression in our presentation "Iris Takes A Trip".

This Tuesday February 8th KTAA members will be able to see the work of Bettina and Lubna with a focus on off loom weaving and bead embroidery through a story line by Iris our lampworked bead by the Master Lampwork Artist Leah Fairbanks. Pushing The Envelope: Perfecting Techniques

There are several beading artists who can work in a whole range of techniques, however the artists who delve in three to four main techniques seem to have come up with real innovations and beaded adorned objects through this intense focus and concentration that comes with perfecting a stitch and pushing the envelope creatively. I myself have explored many stitches yet am more willing to explore the possibilities with a pretty tight range of off loom weaving with Peyote, Ndebele, Spiral, and Right Angle Weave in various forms in addition to Bead Embroidery that employs these off loom weaving stitches along with the back stitch and embellishing.

Here are some recent examples of my delving in to (RAW) Right Angle Weave which seems to have originated in three different geographic regions, Eastern Europe and Russia, the Phillipines area and Japan.

Mucha's Flowers Bracelet

It is a very simple stitch that employs the geometry of right angles but is limitless in design options as it can be made to look like fabric in addition to being worked in layers, tubes and to also curve. The one point that may come as a surprise is that it employs a lot more thread than most other stitches. However, the rewards are worth the thread eating trade off.

Byzantine Queen Earrings

Many different types of patterning can be established, one has to really play with the options and possibilities and create a lot of different samples before embarking on a complete piece. In my case, I have created several samples that can give me a head start whenever a new project is started.


Madha'ad in Celadon

Here is another example of Right Angle Weave in an interpretation of the Madha'ad or bangle. The piece is molded and takes structure with a base that allows the stitch and pattern to be presented in a three dimensional mode.
So, when you master a certain technique or stitch, play and explore it to as far as you think you can go and then some. Modify a color, or a size or pattern sequence and the practice and playing will lead to new expressions and articulations.
Beads, finishes and the off-loom weaving stitches will allow for endless and infinite possibilities.

We will be exhibiting at the Gallery Tilal Booth our Collectors Range of bikers helmets upcycled and recreated at REUSE this January 11-13th at ACK. Learn how to create a flat peyote band and make into a ring. This technique will enable you to create tubes and beaded beads in no time. After creating the ring base you will learn how to create layers with a technique we call "Stitch the Ditch" with our beautiful Czech Crystal Bicones. This is our first class of introducing the lariat necklace. With picture perfect weather, as I sit here writing this post in my garden, listening to the birds energetically chirp, and a lounging lazy gray cat who's our neighbor but happens to believe he owns the garden, plans for LB o J'zazz readers, friends and clients are underway.

Delectable, Delightful and oh So Divine....... Decopatch

Yesterday while in the garden, I got to snap some shots of our new Decopatch Papers collection and outdoors the colors and designs were as refreshing as our current weather conditions. This paper is so easy to work with and molds itself well to practically any surface with our non-toxic water based glue. All inks used are water based, in addition to being sourced from sustainable eucalyptus trees from France. So, take a sneak peak as this is just a little sampling.

Each paper is an A3 size and goes a long way when working on projects. None of your little pieces will go to waste as they can be easily stored and used in future projects.

Czech seed beads come in six loop hanks

The nomenclature "seed beads" came from the ancient practice of putting holes in seeds and stringing to create jewelry. Today, "seed beads" connotes and encompasses a wide range of shapes and sizes of small glass beads beginning with antique beads anywhere from the smallest size of 24 all the way to size 2. These sizes are considered "aught" whereby the higher the number the smaller the bead. However, the most utilized sizes are size 15, 11 and 8. The size 11 is the most popular size employed today globally. These beads were crafted by very capable artisans who would take a huge glob of molten glass, then a punty would be applied on one side and two men would proceed to pull the glass. This was no easy feat especially when micro beads were being made.

Today certain types of machinery are employed but the hand making process still plays an important role. Many avid collectors have stashes of beads that are no longer made and have lusters, finishes and colors that will not be found again. We are constantly on the lookout for older vintage or antique beads. Vintage is usually seed beads manufactured twenty five years ago or more. So, if you have some old beads tucked away in a box you can incorporate them in special one off pieces.

At LB o J'zazz there is an ample selection of Czech Seed Beads in size 11, 8 and the special 1-Cut Charlottes in Size 13. We will also be introducing new colors and palettes soon. You will recognize them as they are packaged and displayed in six loop hanks. The total weights of each color vary due to the special finishes, dyes and lusters that are used.

With millions of seed beads around the world, we are proud to say our collection is growing. As the Czech's have the largest, most extensive range, sizes and finishes, the japanese have entered the mass seed production market in the last decade and have brought to the world the most uniform seed beads yet. This is especially important to off-loom beaders who use peyote, brick or ladder stitching techniques as uniformity in cut allows for beads to stack up balanced and finishes come out feeling and looking like fabric on the skin.

With that note said, on our shelves you will find a new range of metallic Delica beads, Duracoat beads, and a wonderful assortment of different shapes, sizes and colors of Japanese and Czech seed beads in our new Bead Soup.

Eastern Europe and in particular the Bohemian Region within the Czech Republic has been renowned for hundreds of years to be high quality producers of glass beads reaching as far as Africa, South America and the Far East. What differentiates this sector in this region is that it truly is a cottage industry. Despite serious attempts during the period of Communism to nationalize and force consolidations and the mass production approach of the post-Glasnost era, the cottage industry still remains and luckily is being maintained due to global demand.

We began our offerings last year, with our extensive range of Bohemian Machine Cut Crystals in bicones, drops and spacers. More items were added with our handcrafted Cabochons, farfalles, peacock beads and pressed glass. Now, we are very excited to offer a new range in seed beads in various finishes and sizes.

Size 13 Charlottes

The first unique type of bead is our range in Size 13 Charlottes. These beads are created by beginning with long tubes of glass that are cut in a round shape and then given a 1-Cut edge that creates a glimmer effect and is also called True cuts. When used in combination with other beads they provide a vintage feel to beaded objects. The beads come in 6 string hanks and the weights vary depending on finishes.

The most popular seed bead size is 11 and are available in various finishes such as AB, Luster, Matte AB, Silver Lined, Copper Lined, Ceylon and Standard classic finishes. What makes Czech beads an essential addition to your bead stash is that some colors are never made again, in addition to their crafty feel as the shapes are rounder. Czech size 11s are slightly smaller than what you will experience in Japanese ranges.

It seems that the change of weather has affected our creativity with several new projects and ideas underway. What better way to spend a quiet Friday with fellow beaders and like minded individuals.

Mucha's Nouveau Bracelet Class THIS Saturday October 9

Mucha was a pioneer and innovator who triggered the Art Nouveau Movement whilst designing a poster for the great Sarah Bernhardt in the 1800's. Born in the Czech Republic ( Moravia) his style created a romanticism of the feminine form in a garden like setting. Mucha's stylization, form and use of colors inspired this bracelet.

A simple yet innovative recipe to create a whimsical and floral style bracelet. Five luscious garden colorways have been carefully concocted with 5mm and 4mm Czech Crystals. Inspired by the Art Nouveau's approach to floral motifs you will learn the technique of RAW* (Right Angle Weave) and experiment with patterning and different effects of embellishing.

Technique: RAW* (Right Angle Weave) & some Wirework

Tools to Bring: Beading Mat, Beading Triangle/Scooper, Craft Scissors, Chainnose and Flatnose Pliers.

In this session you will master the single needle Right-angle Weave (RAW) using shimmering Czech Fire Polished beads and lead-free crystal bicones. This romantic interpretation of arab geometry is a beautiful addition to the up-coming fall season. To eccentuate this piece further, you will also learn to incorporate different elemental glass beads such as the daggers.

We would like to welcome you all back from Eid celebrations and hope that you are rested, well fed and ready to master some new projects that will surely challenge you, engage you and fulfill the need to bead! Bettina and I got a chance to revamp some projects, bead some new ones and create new colorways. Arabesque Earrings

Technique: Netting

Inspired by Arabesque designs and geometry, Bettina has come up with a circular design combining seed beads and crystals. Bettina created this as she was exploring Islamic design and art from the Isfahani tiles during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Once you master this new netting technique you can create and assemble more elaborate units as the variations and colorways unfold.

This piece combines the rich softness of Czech Firepolished Crystals and Machine Cut Crystals in 3mm along with hand crafted Pressed Glass Daggers.

The Ndebele off loom weave stitch is an age old tradition that the Zulus of South Africa have perfected and due to it's elegant simplicity has resonated across the centuries. Bettina will be teaching this introductory class that will enable you to take this stitch to different and new articulations.
